I bought this on a recommendation of a good friend. It is a lovely romance/spy story which is populated by interesting female characters and lots of very polite, middle class retirees. I particularly like the main protagonist and the strong female love interest. A gentle, fun story with a little edge of the sinister. I bought it yesterday and read it whenever I had a few spare minutes.

I thought it was a really gripping little read. The story has a really nice fun feel to it. Brearley’s world really draws the reader in, and I think the smoking, drinking silver fox persona suits his character down to the ground. The various busy-body characters, villains, bumbling middlemen, and general setting of The Royale was brilliantly thought out. I particularly found an element of humour in the concept of a retired Secret Service agent! A thoroughly enjoyable read to settle into a comfy chair with on a Sunday evening.
I love that Dan gets a chance to "retire" with a bang, March 12, 2015

I found Derek Taylor's book to be a refreshing in depth read. I love that Dan gets a chance to "retire" with a bang. Dan is methodical, as a former Secret Agent would be. His budding romance with one of the ladies living in the apartment complex is nicely portrayed. It is very well written and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good clean mystery without a lot of bloodshed.
